The truth….I think more people think about “facts” than “truth.” The fact is that I am currently writing this blog post and that it is a sunny day outside today. Truth is a little different than this. The truth encompasses facts but is not necessarily as easily quantifiable. You can look outside to confirm that it’s sunny (depending on where you live!) but you can’t look outside in the same way to discover the truth that God exists. You can’t just look around you and “see” the “truth” that murder is evil.Â
We live in an age of subjectivity. What’s true for you may not be true for me and vice versa. A lot of people don’t even believe in the idea of absolute truth. Everything is merely a matter of perspective and the only thing that is believed are the facts that can be observed through the 5 senses. I’m going through the 70 resolutions of Jonathan Edwards and his 34th resolution was…
Resolved, In narrations, never to speak any thing but the pure and simple verity.
Verity…truth. Jonathan Edwards only wanted to speak truth. Do we have the same resolve? I would be lying if I said that I did in every context. A lot of times I give more credit to my feelings than I should. If something feels true, then it is right? No. Truth is regardless of how we feel about it. If our lives are not at least somewhat purposed around the understanding of and sharing of truth, we are in trouble. We live in a world that is filled with truth and lies. If we do not make a conscious effort to live in truth, we will inevitably find ourselves living lives that are governed by deception.Â
