Sometimes you just have to let it go. I put a lot of effort into everything that I do. I want to please God and serve people but the obvious truth is that I make a lot of mistakes. I’m going through the 70 resolutions of Jonathan Edwards and his 35th resolution was…
Resolved, whenever I so much question whether I have done my duty, as that my quiet and calm is thereby disturbed, to set it down, and also how the question was resolved.
Edwards put a lot of effort into life as well. He accomplished many things but he was human too. He made mistakes and like so many of us, he struggled with worrying about those mistakes. What I believe he’s saying in this resolution is to let it go. I’m certain that Edwards tried to grow from the mistakes that he made but he also understood that he needed to press on. The apostle Paul agreed with him in Philippians 3:13-14 which says, “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul is saying the same thing. Forget about it. Learn from your mistakes and then press on. Don’t let them eat at you.
God loves you so much and does not want your life to be encumbered by worrying and fretting over decisions that you already made. We can go to the other extreme and not care at all when we make mistakes but that would be a drastic over-correction. We should learn from our mistakes and then press on.Â
