I have to be honest and say that a lot of times I don’t take God nearly as seriously as I should. I have a much easier time imagining Jesus as my friend than I do imagining him as my King and Lord. There are times (probably more than I’d care to admit) that I approach prayer extremely flippantly. Edwards’ 29th resolution was…(I’m working through all 70 of the resolutions of Jonathan Edwards in case you were wondering)

Resolved, Never to count that a prayer, nor to let that pass as a prayer, nor that as a petition of a prayer, which is so made, that I cannot hope that God will answer it; nor that as a confession which I cannot hope God will accept.

He’s saying that he takes God seriously. That he honors God. That when he speaks to him, he means what he says. I heard an explanation of honor one time that really stuck out to me. If you were driving down the road and you saw a massive boulder right in front of you, you would quickly get out of the way of it. You would take it seriously. Someone who honors God takes God seriously. We’re not talking about a paralyzing fear that makes you not want to approach him. We’re talking about a holy reverence that acknowledges the one you’re speaking to.

This resolution by Edwards really challenges me to take a minute when I pray to remember that I’m talking to the Creator of the universe. I’m thankful that he wants a close relationship with me but I should take him seriously.
