I don’t know if you have ever been rock climbing before but I have and I also happen to have an acute fear of heights. I haven’t been a bunch but I remember the first time I went. I did not want to trust the belay and I knew that I could climb the first part of the rock without having to use IT. It was a 50 foot rock wall and I got up about 25 feet. I knew that if I was going to make it the rest of the way, then I was going to need to really trust the belay and the person doing it. There was a part of me that felt like I had gone high enough.
Sometimes I feel like that in my walk with Christ. Sometimes I feel like I’ve gone high enough. Whenever I let fear dominate my thinking, I kind of just want to camp out where I’m at and not go any further. I’m going through the 70 resolutions of Jonathan Edwards and his 30th resolution was…
Resolved, To strive every week to be brought higher in religion, and to a higher exercise of grace, than I was the week before.
I hear Edwards saying here that he was never going to stop climbing. He just wanted to keep going higher and higher. It’s easy to think that but to actually live this way is a different story. As I climb higher and higher in my relationship with God, I recognize that there’s more sacrifice and more difficult decisions. Sometimes I just want to stop climbing. To just say that this is good enough. I think to really grow in your relationship with God you have to develop an obsession with the summit. You have to want to climb to the top. You have to want all God has for you. If you’re not ambitious about that, then at some point you’ll stop. The tragic thing about that is that you’ll never know what you missed out on.
So what about you? Are you going for the summit? Are you obsessed with it? I can’t wait to see the view!!
