Resolved, To be continually endeavouring to find out some new contrivance and invention to promote the forementioned things.

Edwards is obviously referring to resolution 1 where he basically says that he wants to do whatever it takes to best serve God and men. What I love about this second resolution is that he uses the word “endeavoring.” For Edwards, growing in his walk with the Lord was something that captured his imagination and his greatest aspirations. He was continually preoccupied with his development as a follower of Jesus. He wanted it more than he wanted anything else.

You find many people today that endeavor to grow financially. You find a lot of people that scheme about how they can develop their marriage. People try to find new contrivances that will help them to become better athletes. But you typically don’t find people who make it their lifelong pursuit to best serve God and men. This introduces the power of focus. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” In this passage God is telling us that we will find him when we go after him with everything that we have. By the sound of it, I believe that Edwards found God because he pursued him this way.
