As I reflect on my journey as a Christian, I see a thread that has connected a lot of the different blessings that I’ve been privileged to experience. Anytime God works in our lives, the credit obviously goes to him. That being said, we need to understand that there are things that we can do that place us in a posture where God can bless us. I think it’s pretty clear that God doesn’t bless or condone sin. That isn’t to say that we need to be perfect to experience God’s favor, but we can go too far in that direction and deceive ourselves into thinking that there is nothing that we can do to attract the blessings of God.

One of the biggest principles I’ve learned to attract God’s blessing is to do what I say I’m going to do. I don’t always come through, but I really try to prioritize this principle. If I say I’m going to call someone, I call them. If I say that I’m going to pray for someone, I pray. This is an area that I try to be really intentional in. We live in a culture where someone’s word doesn’t usually mean a whole lot. People say one thing and do another all the time. It’s common. One of the most powerful decisions that we can make is to be men and women who do what we say we’re going to do.

The ramifications of this commitment are far-reaching. We show up on time when we commit to something. We come prepared when that is the expectation. We show up when we say we will and we call when we tell someone we’ll call. Inside there just needs to be a sensor that goes off when we tell someone we’ll do something. We write it down, put it in our calendar and do whatever it takes to come through on our commitment. What this actually does is make us less flippant when we do make commitments. If we take our word seriously, we’ll become much more intentional with what we commit to because we understand the cost involved.

I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of going back on our word. We shouldn’t have to say,”I promise” in order for someone to take us seriously. We should just be able to say that we’re in and people know that they can count on us. I would imagine we have all known those people before who always go back on their word. You simply can’t count on them. We know what it feels like to be disappointed and let down. To show up to the meeting and get that phone call or text saying that they forgot or can’t make it this time. I cringe as I write this because I’ve been on both sides of that phone call before.

Let’s turn the tide on this. It’s simply a matter of integrity. Not only will this communicate a strong message to the world around us, we’ll also experience tremendous blessings. Some of the coolest stories I have come from simply showing up when I said I would. That has been the railroad track that has connected many of the different opportunities and blessings that I’ve experienced.

At the end of the day, this is what representing God is all about. God is always true to his word. When he says he is going to do something, there is no question as to whether or not he’ll do it. He is always faithful to us even though we are constantly unfaithful to him.
