Obviously my prayers change from day to day, but there is a consistent theme every time I pray. When I approach God, I know that I’m in the presence of someone who is so much greater than I understand. I know that his love for me is beyond comprehension and I know that his power is limitless. I know that his understanding knows no bounds and that he is perfect in every way. I’m also quite certain that he’s not struggling to figure out what he wants to do. I would imagine that his vision for this world and the people in it is pretty compelling.
Whenever I pray, I’m basically just praying that he would take over in every way. I’m confident in the fact that he’s a great artist and a great author. When I look at a sunset or the starry firmament, these truths are reinforced. I want to see more of his artistry. This leads me to pray that he would do in and through me whatever he wants whenever he wants to. I don’t want to get in the way. In John 3, Jesus compared his work in our lives to the blowing of the wind. That’s what I want. I ask him daily to take over in my life and to work in me with no hindrance even as the wind blows without limitations. I pray that for me and my family every single day. That’s what I want for my marriage and for my kids. I’m convinced that God loves me and has my absolute best interest at heart. I don’t feel the need to micromanage him at all…as if that were possible.
I know he knows exactly what I need, what I want and everything else. He knows how my life syncs up with the past, the present and the future. He knows every person on this planet and knows how this whole thing is supposed to come together. He understands what is desperately wrong with the world and what is right with it. I don’t feel the need to spend too much time trying to explain stuff to him. I do on the other hand, open up to him about how I feel. That’s part of the relationship. But when push comes to shove, I’m praying something like this….
God, I need you. Thank you for this day. I pray that you would take over completely. Use me and my family however you want. You are a gracious, compassionate and loving God. I know that you have our best interest at heart. Do in and through me whatever you desire. I confess that I resist you all the time. I have difficulty trusting and sometimes just want to do things my way. God, I pray that you have your way in and through me. I pray for my family that you would do whatever you want to do in our lives. I pray against anything in us that would hinder your will from being accomplished….have your way in and through us.
Amen
A lot of times I will go into more detail than that, but that’s the basic idea. That’s my prayer. That’s my daily prayer. My hope for my life and yours is that we will see the Master’s poetry expressed in all it’s fullness.
What’s your daily prayer?
