I don’t know how many of you saw the sermon at Seacoast this weekend but it was incredibly powerful. One of the themes that stuck out to me was the brevity of life. We just don’t have that long on this side of eternity. Even if we live to 85 or 90 years old, life on this earth really is but a mist just like the Bible teaches (James 4:14).

I turned 31 the other day and I thought this was interesting. I’ve been alive for 11,315 days….wow! That means I’ve had about 271,560 hours on this planet so far. To go one step further, I’ve had 16,293,600 minutes in my life up to this point. Pretty crazy! I don’t know how much more life God has for me but I do know that it’s limited. I have a limited number of dollars that will pass through my hands and a limited amount of time with my wife and kids. A limited number of breaths… a limited number of everything.

The brevity of life is not a popular topic. I think there are a lot of reasons for that. People typically don’t like to think about it because it forces us to ask tougher questions. What am I doing with my life? What’s my purpose? Am I using my time well? Tough questions often necessitate hard conversations and difficult answers. The limited nature of our life on earth is a message that is all around us if we’ll open our eyes. More importantly, I think the recognition of this reality has a way of focusing us and elevating our lives to a new level if we’ll embrace it.
