To continue this blog series on the 70 resolutions of Jonathan Edwards, we now turn to resolution #12 which says,

Resolved, If I take delight in it as a gratification of pride, or vanity, or on any such account, immediately to throw it by.

In this resolution Edwards is speaking about his previous resolution where he talks about trying to solve theorems related to divinity. He is telling us here that he didn’t want to be bothered or hindered by pride that would tell him that the credit belonged to him for his discoveries.

Pride can be an enormous distraction. God is calling us to humbly serve him and give him all the glory in our lives. Pride obscures our viewpoint like looking through a telescope the wrong way. Everything out there looks really small and you look really big. In reality, God is really big and you are really small. Yes you have gifts. Yes you have talents….but no, the credit does not belong to you. Were God to withdraw his hand and breath from our lungs, we would be no more.

Let’s stay focused and remember where the credit goes.
