Proverbs 10:14 says,

The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.

What we let into our hearts is a big deal. In fact, Proverbs 4:23 says to guard your heart “above all else.” Wise people store up knowledge. They store up good things. Just think of the hearts of people as being similar to houses. Wise people only let good things into their houses. They store up wisdom, goodness, love, beauty and all kinds of other noble things. That’s why grace comes out of their mouths and proceeds forth from their lives. It’s because that’s what they spend their time storing up.

“…the mouth of a fool invites ruin.” Foolish people let darkness into their hearts. They watch it on TV and on the internet. They talk about other people behind their backs and are always looking for vanity to fill their schedules with. We can’t choose to not store things up. The decisions we make will fill our hearts and lives with either good or evil. The ramifications and cumulative impact from those decisions is the difference between death and life. It’s the difference between leaving a great legacy and being quickly forgotten. It’s the difference between heaven and hell. I’m in no way saying that we can earn heaven on our own merits but we prove the legitimacy of our salvation through the choices we make. Those who have been impacted by Jesus will demonstrate that through lives of service and wisdom.
