Proverbs 10:13 says…

Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.

Wisdom is not easily achieved. I looked up the word in the original Hebrew and the first definition said, “Skill in war.” It takes time, experience and plenty of instruction to gain a heart of wisdom. Nobody just drifts into it. It has to be sought after. It’s not about having a bunch of knowledge or being smart. It’s much deeper than that. Wisdom and godliness go hand in hand because God is the author of wisdom. You can’t reject relationship with God and yet expect to be wise. As you seek God however, you will find that you grow in wisdom. That wisdom will protect you from a lot of the needless woes and turmoil that fill the lives of so many.

“…a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.” Some people only seem to learn in pain. Others never learn in the face of unthinkable pain. Some people seem to imagine that God is too difficult to find. They think of him as constantly standing far off but this is not the case. As a loving Father, God is constantly pursuing the hearts of people. You have to work hard to reject him. Nobody will ever be able to get to the end of their life and say, in truth, that they would have followed God if he had been more clear. God is a phenomenal communicator. Those that don’t follow him are choosing not to follow him. They are not victims. I’ve heard it said before that the two great motivators in life are pain and passion. I would rather learn by passion than by pain but either way, I want to learn and grow.

Life is too short to make the same mistakes over and over again. God has too much in store for us. Are you seeking wisdom? How can you seek it even more? I have a couple of ideas…

1. Spent time daily reading the Bible. It is full of wisdom and worth every second spent in it.

2. Pray. God is willing and able to speak to you. Spend time in his presence daily even if you don’t know where to begin. He’ll meet you there.

3. Get a mentor. There are older and wiser people out there that would love to spend time with you and share their successes and failures. Why not take them up on it?

4. Read, read and read some more. There are tons of phenomenal books out there on every topic under the sun. Why not make a lifelong commitment to learn from others?
