What do you look for in a friend? Someone you can confide in? Someone you can trust? I look for someone that I feel safe being myself around knowing that they will accept me just as I am. I would wholeheartedly say that my wife is my best earthly friend. She has seen me in my highest highs and in my lowest lows. I seriously could not ask for a better friend to walk through life with. I also have some really close dudes in my life. Guys that I know will always be there for me regardless of where life takes me. If you’re one of those people, you know who you are.
That being said, even the best human friendships have their limits. Even Abbi can’t understand me totally. I can’t expect her to be my emotional support in every conceivable way. At the end of the day, my best friend is Jesus Christ. Some people might say this and it be trite religious talk but that’s not what I mean. Since I asked Jesus into my life on December 12th of 2000, he has been there for me through thick and thin. I trust him more than I could ever express. He has been my comfort….my peace…the fire in my soul…my purpose…my strength…my joy and my reason for living. I confide in him about everything. I’ve been working through the 70 resolutions of Jonathan Edwards and his 53rd resolution is…
Resolved, To improve every opportunity, when I am in the best and happiest frame of mind, to cast and venture my soul on the Lord Jesus Christ, to trust and confide in him, and consecrate myself wholly to him; that from this I may have assurance of my safety, knowing that I confide in my Redeemer.Â
I believe that Edwards saw Jesus as his best friend. The only way that this can be accomplished is through time, transparency and determination. In any friendship you have to battle anything that would hinder the relationship. You ask the tough questions and say the difficult thing. If the friendship is true, it will persevere and get stronger through those trials. This has been my experience in my relationship with God. There have been times when I would have left him. Times when I thought life would be better off without him. But through it all I have found what is written in Psalm 84, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.”Â
