In Matthew 8 we find a very interesting account of Jesus and the disciples. They are on a boat going from one side of a lake to another when suddenly a “furious storm” came upon them. Have you guys ever faced a furious storm in your life? Storms can come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Financial storms. Emotional storms. Relationship storms. Marital storms. Everybody faces storms. The disciples were obviously really freaked out when this storm came upon the lake. This is notable because they were fishermen. This wasn’t their first storm so it had to be really bad for them to be as scared as they were.
So right in the middle of the storm Jesus asks them a very poignant but strange question…”Why are you so afraid?” Well, let’s think about this one Jesus. There is a massive storm all around us. We could very easily die. This isn’t rocket science! But let’s dig a little deeper. They have the Son of God in the boat. He is the very one who has the ability to create storms and do whatever he wants to do. They should have known that nothing bad was going to happen to them with Jesus in the boat.
I believe that Jesus comes to each of us with that same question. Why are you so afraid? Really take a minute with that. Try to answer it if you are battling with fear. The question is very powerful because it reveals a somewhat startling truth and that’s that we really don’t have any good reasons to be afraid. Fear has a way of convincing us that it belongs in our heart. Well Chris, if you knew what I know or if you saw what I see, you’d know that you need to fear. Really try to answer the question. Write down your answer. I think that this will help you see that perhaps your “reasons” for being afraid weren’t as solid as you had imagined. God is good and he loves you dearly. He is all powerful and if you have a relationship with him, then he’s in the boat with you. You have no reason to be afraid. If you’re afraid, take out a journal and answer the question that Jesus asked. Let God lead you to his peace as you find that you have nothing to fear.
