I believe that deep down, we all have a sense as to where we’re supposed to go in life…a sense of true north. Something in us that tells us what’s true and what’s not. This quiet voice can be buried under years of compromises and confusion but I don’t think we can ever completely silence it. In the midst of the waves and tumult of daily life, it beckons to us to stay true to what we ultimately know is right.
Sometimes I feel a little like Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. Every time he would pull that compass out the arrow that is supposed to point north would be pointing in the wrong direction. Do you ever feel that way? Like somehow you have lost your way? Like the you that you’ve become isn’t the you that you know you can be? This is when we need to get real quiet and get in touch with that sense of true north. It’s there. It may not be pointing to the most popular path but the path it points to is the one that you will ultimately wish you had chosen. If somebody asked you where true north is, you would probably be able to tell them even though you may not be walking in that direction.
My challenge? Pay attention to that still, small voice. There will always be “reasons” to go in the wrong direction but those “reasons” will not take you home…they will not take you to where you ultimately want to be. Fight the battle to stay true to yourself and that deeply embedded sense of direction. As the waves are crashing over the boat, true north is the light house that helps you remember where you are headed. Surround yourself with others who can help you stay true to that voice and then have the courage to follow it …wherever it may lead.
