against the current

Jeremiah 29:11 teaches us that God has incredible plans for our lives. I believe it wholeheartedly. One of the things I’ve learned however, is that pursuing those plans often feels like swimming upstream. The current towards mediocrity is easy to flow with. I’m going through a book right now called, The War Of Art and it’s phenomenal. One of the things that the author, Steven Pressfield, talks a lot about is resistance. The force that we feel when we try to do something significant or meaningful.

When it comes to the conversations we need to have, the spiritual disciplines we need to engage in, the books we should read, the physical training we need to start and everything else that would help us, the resistance is right there to meet us and fight us to the death. I’ve learned that the resistance is the best indication that we are moving in the right direction. It shouldn’t feel easy. Nothing in life that’s worth having comes without a fight.

You know the road you need to take, and I know mine. It’s the door with the smoke billowing out from it. You know there is a fire on the other side and you know you need to open it. It’s the path that looks treacherous, but you know it’s the only way home. It’s the summit that seems impossible to ascend to. It’s the giant on the hilltop mocking you to come and fight him.

There’s no getting around it. There is an incredible destiny that awaits you but…..you have to be willing to fight. In fact, you may not get out of it alive. That being said, I promise you that it’s better to lose that fight than to not engage in it at all.

I actually wrote a spoken word a while back to depict this struggle and I thought you might enjoy it.
