You know, the very first thing that Adam and Eve did after eating the forbidden fruit was hide. You can read all about it in Genesis 3. Hiding…escaping….numbing the pain. This is kind of the human way. We say things like….
“I just don’t want to deal with it.”
“I want to forget it ever happened.”
“I’m just living for the weekend.”
“I don’t want to think about it and I definitely don’t want to talk about it.”
We know that things aren’t right. We know that things aren’t as they should be and yet….and yet we don’t want to embrace that. The only problem with that way of thinking is that it won’t lead to freedom. Hiding never leads to freedom. Escaping doesn’t lead to freedom. Before something is fixed, we have to acknowledge that it’s broken. Before we get healthy, we have to acknowledge that we’re sick.
Hiding. It’s the very first thing the first humans did after they broke the relationship with their Creator. People have been hiding ever since. There is a temporary comfort in hiding. It feels good for a while. We don’t have to deal with the pain or the wounds inside. We can just run away.
Deep down though….deep down in places that we know exist….there is a deeper cry. There is a cry for freedom. A cry for healing. A desire for wholeness….for restoration. We want it….we just don’t believe we can get it. On our own we most certainly can’t but….with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).
