I talk to people sometimes who think of the will of God like they’re trying to play a game of Clue. If you don’t know what Clue is, it’s just a big guessing game. You’re trying to figure out who committed the murder, what weapon they used and in what room they did it in. These people  say things like….

“God just isn’t speaking to me….”

“I just can’t figure out what he’s saying….”

“God has just been silent and distant for a long time…”

“I just don’t get anything out of the Bible….”

“I pray but nothing ever happens….”

I’m not trying to say that these feelings are completely off base but there is an underlying current I want to address. Holding people accountable who talk like this is next to impossible. They’re incredibly well-intentioned and they would live for God if God wasn’t such a lousy communicator. Did you catch that? They would live for God if God wasn’t such a lousy communicator.

I think we all know that God doesn’t struggle with communication. He would be a terrible Father if he commanded all of his kids to follow him but then didn’t clearly communicate his will to them. When this life is over and we go before God, I don’t think that anyone will ever be able to say to him, “You know…I would have followed you if you had just been more clear.” No one will ever be able to truly say that. This means that I don’t have any excuses and you don’t have any either.

God loves us too much to just leave us hanging and not clearly communicate to us what he wants for our lives. Now, this does not mean that we’re all going to hear from him at the time that we want to and the way that we want but that’s to be expected. If we really believe that God is perfect and eternal, would we really expect him to be just the way we expected? Of course not.

God is not playing games with us. He cares deeply about our lives and so the question is not, “Is God speaking to you?” The question is….”What is God saying to you?”
