Hebrews 12:2 says, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…”

I began reflecting on the idea of God as an author. I tend to think of my life as exactly that…my life. I think about it in terms of my time, my energy, my money, my family, my job and my friends. I also think of this blog as being mine. I am the author of it. I get to choose what goes in and what goes out. I may take some advice from others but ultimately the decision is mine.

Jesus is the author of our faith and I don’t usually think about him that way. I typically think of him as an assistant in my story but certainly not the author. That being said, he is the author regardless of how I may choose to think of him. This means that he sees from a vantage point that I can’t truly appreciate. He sees all the characters in a way that is beyond our comprehension. He understands every detail of the plot in a perfect way and already has the conclusion of the story in mind.

I tend to approach God with an arrogance that assumes that I know the moves he should make. I think that I could come up with some pretty great twists in the plot and I feel like he should listen to me. I need to change my approach. As the author of my faith and the author of our faith, this is his story. He’s the one who has perfect understanding and he is far more invested in the book than we are. How arrogant it must be for a character in the story to assume it has more vested interest in the book than the author who created him?! In light of this simple truth we all should breathe a little bit easier. As the author of the story and a perfect author at that, we can trust that his guiding influence will be present in our lives at the right times and in the right ways. It may not be what we would have scripted but he is the author and he is also the main character in his own story.
