I think it’s pretty safe to say that we live in a complex world. I’m all about keeping things simple but this just isn’t realistic most of the time. Anyone who is married can testify to the truth of that statement! The way our bodies function. The way the universe works. The way that we interact with one another. Life is full of complexity. The second that you think that you have something completely figured out is the second that you find something or someone who has a totally different but valid perspective on the same matter.

The worst thing you could ever possibly do is decide that you are going to stop learning. There are some things that I just flat out believe that you are not going to shake me on. That being said, I’m willing to talk to anyone about anything. I love hearing different perspectives on different ideas that challenge me to go deeper. We live in a world where there are depths of information and wisdom that have yet to be explored. The challenge is to approach each day from the perspective of a learner. Each person and experience has the ability to teach us if we will posture ourselves in this way. It’s easy to judge people and decide that we have nothing to learn from them but this is never the case. Each person has a wealth of experience behind them that we don’t understand and strong listening skills will enable us to tap into that.

How are you doing when it comes to being a learner? Do you feel like you have things pretty much figured out? This instruction to be a learner goes to husbands, sons, fathers, employees, friends and everyone else. We always have so much further to go regardless of how far we’ve come and nothing is worse than pretending that we have arrived. It is exciting that we serve a God who is big enough and live in a world that is exciting enough that we don’t ever have to stop learning. So read authors you have never read before. Listen intently to people who have different experiences than you. Don’t be as quick to speak and choose to be a better listener. Ask questions and really try to approach each day as a discoverer on a big adventure. The excitement of each day automatically increases when you begin to see things this way.
