I’m sure that most of us are aware of this but Judas was the disciple who betrayed Jesus. There is something interesting that occurred to me when I was thinking about what Judas did. I don’t know if everyone who reads this blog believes in the Devil but I’m going to temporarily assume that you do. What I find interesting about the way that Satan came after Jesus is that he did it from inside his inner circle. The attack came not only from someone who was a follower of Jesus, but from someone who was a part of the inner 12.

I believe that representatives of Christ have a greater target on their backs than most people simply because they are a legitimate threat to the work of Satan on this earth. I also believe that the Devil has been using the same tricks for thousands of years and we would be wise to learn something from some of the patterns that emerge. One of the patterns that emerges is that the Enemy likes to attack from the inside. He wants to cozy up to you in the form of a friend, a habit, or something that you enjoy to bring the most damage.

If the Enemy of your soul has a foothold in your life, I would propose that there is a good chance that you don’t even recognize it. It may be a relationship that is bringing you down but you certainly don’t think it could hurt you that much. It may be a lie that you believe or an insecurity that you hold onto that feels more like a friend than a foe. It could be an addiction that you turn to for comfort that seems to be helping you when it is actually hurting you. The Enemy likes to come to you in a such a way that you won’t realize it’s him. He doesn’t come with a red cape and a pitch fork so that you’re on your guard. He’s much craftier than you and may be strongly influencing you through something or someone that you would NEVER suspect.

This tactic of moving into the inner circle like he did with Judas highlights some important needs in our lives. We should be prayerful people. We should be coming to God with open hearts and open minds willing to add or subtract from our lives as he decides to lead us even if it doesn’t make sense in our finite minds. We should have other Christians intimately connected in our lives so that they can see our blind spots. The game of the Enemy is a game of deception and unless you realize the possibility of being deceived, you’re probably going to remain blind to the Enemy’s strongest attacks against your soul. I would imagine we’ve all heard the quote that says, “The greatest trick the Devil ever played is convincing the world he doesn’t exist.” I believe this could be the case. How open are your eyes? How open are you to God’s leading in your life? Do you have brothers or sisters in Christ that can catch your blind spots? There will be attacks against your soul whether you realize it or not and it’s up to you to be ready when they come.
