We’re going through the book of Psalms right now and today we are on Psalm 18. David has been delivered from his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He writes this psalm to give God the praise and credit for all his victories. There are a lot of different ways to see David. He was David, the giant-slayer and David, the military tactician. He was also David, the songwriter and David, the psalmist. On the darker side, he was David, the adulterer and David, the murderer. Yet even through David’s greatest sins and mistakes, we mostly know him as David, the “man after God’s own heart.”

David experienced great victories in his life and incredible levels of success and fame. In this psalm, we see the secret to his success. David walked humbly with God. He entrusted his life completely to him and God brought him to places he never dreamed possible. In verses 33-34 he says, “He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.” For the most part, David was a humble king. He was a man of God before he was a king and a brilliant military strategist. He remembered where his true identity was and remained the humble shepherd boy at heart. What about you? Are you primarily a mom? Are you a CEO or a successful businessman or woman? At the core of who we are, may we be humble men and women of God who stay rooted to our identity no matter how much success we may experience. 

David, as a humble king, ultimately points to The Humble King who showed up on the scene many years later…Jesus Christ. Jesus is the King of Heaven and yet he left his royal majesty behind to come to earth to die on the cross for our sins. As we experience his love for us and his presence in our lives, he will lead us into the destiny he has for us which will in turn point others to him. This was David’s story and it can be ours as well.
