I’ve always loved the Psalms. They’re transparent, inspired, passionate and real. I’m going to start working through them one day at a time and I believe that it will be a powerful series. Psalm 1 says,

1 Blessed is the one
    who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
    or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
    which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

The theme that I see here is to stay rooted. What is your source of encouragement and inspiration? We not only need to have one but we also need to have the right one. If our source of encouragement is something that is fading or unstable, we will always feel insecure. Here the Psalmist is encouraging us to ground our lives in the unchanging promises of God. As we do that we will find that our lives produce incredible fruit. In this Psalm, wickedness is equated with instability or chaff. The wicked are not rooted in the source of life and therefore their lives have no substance.
