Sometimes I live as if I had forever on this side of heaven. I don’t know why I live that way but I frequently do. When I live that way I don’t care all that much about where I spend my time. It doesn’t matter if I invest wisely and focus on my priorities. I have forever so I’ll figure all the important stuff out later. Edwards’ 9th resolution was….
Resolved, To think much, on all occasions, of my dying, and of the common circumstances which attend death.
Seems kind of morbid right? I agree. But maybe Edwards understood something that we don’t. Maybe he understood that it is only as we focus on our mortality that we can truly live life to fullest. Our time on this earth is but a breath but we have eternity awaiting us on the other side. Most people don’t like to think about eternity and where they are going to spend it but it’s coming. People seem to have an aversion to getting super “spiritual” or “religious” but we would be wise to consider these things.
I think that if we learned from this particular resolution from Edwards that it could enrich our lives. What will we wish we had done more of or less of when we’re close to the end of this life? Why not do those things now instead of having to experience the regret of wasted time?
