Being convinced that God loves us can be difficult at times. Let’s be honest…there isn’t one passage in the Bible with your specific name in it. We know that Jesus did what he did but it can be difficult to personalize. If this is your first time checking out this blog, I’m taking 1 resolution of Jonathan Edwards each day and reflecting on it. His 25th resolution said….

Resolved, To examine carefully and constantly, what that one thing in me is, which causes me in the least to doubt of the love of God; and so direct all my forces against it.

Edwards knew in his heart of hearts that God loved him but he obviously had difficulty believing it. For me this is his most important resolution so far. If we don’t believe that God really loves us, we will never WANT to serve him. Now, we may be afraid of him and serve him out of obligation but we’ll never really and truly want to. This will make our spiritual journey a very heavy load and we probably will quit along the way.

That being said, if we actually believe that God loves us and that he is completely trustworthy, something amazing will happen. We’ll begin to truly want to serve him which will make spending time with him much less of a discipline and much more of a passion. Don’t get me wrong…I want to be known as a disciplined person but I’d much rather be known as a passionate person. I want my relationship with God to be characterized by love and desire….not obligation and fear.

What causes you to doubt the love of God? Perhaps we could all learn from Edwards and fight the forces in us that cause us to doubt his love. I believe it will be well worth the effort.
