Resolved, To inquire every night, as I am going to bed, wherein I have been negligent,—what sin I have committed,—and wherein I have denied myself;—also, at the end of every week, month, and year.

The reality is that most people just live their lives without much reflection as to how things are going. We kind of drift from one day to the next without really asking the tougher questions. What Edwards is saying here is that he wants to have a bird’s-eye view of his life. A bird’s-eye view gives us the ability to make adjustments where they are necessary. This insures that we will not get caught up in the same patterns and continue to make the same mistakes.

The only real way to get a bird’s-eye view is to seek God’s perspective. His is the only view that is not hindered by anything. If we really believe that God is able and willing to speak to us, this idea should not seem terribly daunting. God is able to give us a perspective that is unhindered by our emotional, spiritual and intellectual limitations. As we prayerfully consider our lives and seek a bird’s-eye view, we will be able to better live the lives that we were created to live. 

I don’t want to get to the end of my life with a ton of regrets. I want to get to the end and see a life well-lived. A life lived with the highest priorities in mind. A life lived that reflects heartfelt worship of my Creator and genuine love for humanity. What about you? Do you have a bird’s-eye view? Are you seeking it?
