Psalm 139:23-24 says, “23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me,  and lead me in the way everlasting.”

The reason that this is my favorite prayer to pray is because I know I have blind spots in my life. There are areas in my heart and life that I know need to improve but I simultaneously don’t know how to change them. This prayer is my way of asking God to catch all my blind spots. I’m asking him to look me over from his perspective and change whatever he wants to change in me. I can be very prideful at times and resistant to change depending on the part of my life in question. There are some areas where I’m open to correction and others where I don’t really care to hear any critique. That being said, my heart towards God is that I would always be pliable in whatever ways that he wants me to be.

How open is your heart towards God? Are there certain areas where you tend to be resistant? Are there parts of your life that you have deemed as being “Hands Off” towards him? We tend to be open to God in the arenas that don’t matter as much to us but when it comes to the things that we’re the most invested in, being open becomes an entirely different story. In these areas we may want to collaborate with God but we certainly don’t approach him as our King. We want to take control in these important matters because dropping the ball is not an option in our minds and we think God may drop the ball. This of course shows that we don’t completely trust God.

My encouragement to you would be to begin praying this prayer once in a while. There is nothing magic to it but it models a heart that is pliable towards God. Perhaps if you will allow this prayer to begin working in your heart, you may find yourself receptive to him in areas where you would otherwise have been resistant. If you begin to be open to him in those areas, who knows what kind of amazing things will happen?
