One of my favorite speeches of all time is the speech that Al Pacino gives to his football team in the locker room in the movie Any Given Sunday. If you go watch the speech, I’ll warn you that there is some colorful language in it but I love the concept. Pacino says that football and life are games of inches. He tells his team that the inches that they need are everywhere and all around them…all the time. He tells them that winners in life are those who are willing to fight and die for that inch. I’ve been working through the 70 resolutions of Jonathan Edwards and his 41st resolution was…

Resolved, to ask myself, at the end of every day, week, month, and year, wherein I could possibly, in any respect, have done better.

Edwards wanted that inch. I love that he said, “in any respect.” Edwards wanted to grow in every single possible way regardless of the consequences. What are some inches that you could take?

Here are some of the inches I’m working on…

1. Spend deeper and more quality in the Bible.

2. Deepen my time in prayer.

3. Increase the level of surrender that I approach God with. I want to be “all in.”

4. Be a better date night planner for Abbi!

5. Spend more 1 on 1 time with my 2 boys.

6. Learn how to eat healthy (-;

7. Get back in the gym!

The list could keep on going but those are some of the inches that I need to take. There is something cool that happens in the lives of people who fight for inches. They look back at the end of their lives and realize that they didn’t just travel inches…they covered miles and miles one inch at a time!
