I’ve been thinking a lot about trust lately. Trust as it relates to God…trust as it relates to people….trust. When I think of trust I immediately think of those trust falls that we used to do in school. I’m sure you guys have done them before. A person would stand behind you and your job was just to fall believing that they would catch you. They were always fun for me but a little scary too. I had to decide whether or not I trusted the person. Generally I was pretty convinced that the person wasn’t going to step out of the way and let me fall but you never realize what you think about someone until you have to trust them. Are they strong enough to catch you? What if they’re not paying attention? What if they didn’t understand the instructions of the exercise and they just blow it? I mean, the possibility if all goes wrong is that you will crack your skull on the surface of whatever you are standing on. You don’t want to take any chances.
Lately I’ve been feeling like God is really calling me to trust him. It’s one thing to say that you trust God but it’s another thing to really trust him. First off, you don’t see God. What if you really go for it and trust God but he allows you to fall? I know that for me it’s been difficult to really trust him. To be perfectly honest, I don’t want to. My preference is to lean on myself and trust my own ability to get things done. I like the idea of God as a back up plan when all else fails but I don’t really care for the idea of him as my number 1Â go to. Nonetheless, I believe he’s calling me to trust him. You never really know what you believe about someone until you have to trust them. You really find out what you believe about a person if you need to trust them with what matters most to you.
You see, Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us that we are to trust God with “all our heart.” That’s everything. What if he doesn’t come through? What if it doesn’t work out? What if he fails me? God calls us to put all our eggs in one basket and conventional wisdom generally tells us that this is a bad idea in most respects. Something deep inside of me really does want to go for it and trust him because I know he’s trustworthy. I also know that he laid down his life for us thus proving to all of us once and for all that he loves us completely. It’s now up to us. Will we trust him? I’m sure that we could all come up with tons of excuses but that’s all they are because deep down I think we all know that trusting him is the way to go. What’s holding you back? Would you be willing to be open up about that and start taking steps to trust him?
