Edwards’ 7th resolution was…
Resolved, Never to do any thing, which I should be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life.
This resolution of Edwards reminds me of that song “Live like you were dyin.” It may sound cliche but….what would you do or what wouldn’t you do if you only had 1 hour left. I would let the people I know how much I love them. I would probably stop trying to be macho and let my friends know how much they mean to me. I would focus on my wife and my sons. I would tell EVERYONE I could think of how much Jesus means to me and that he’s the only way to life. I would tell people not to mourn too much for me because I’m going to a better place than any of us could imagine.
The clock right now says 5:35am. I’m an early riser (-; If I knew I had till 6:35 and that was it…I would focus on what mattered most. Edwards isn’t merely making a statement however, about what he would do but also about what he wouldn’t do. I don’t have any desire to live in fear. I wonder why Edwards worded this statement that way and it makes me wonder how much fear he had in his heart. That being said, I do think we should have a holy fear of God that looks more like reverence. If I knew I only had till 6:35, I would take some of that time for prayer. I would want to make sure that God and I didn’t have any unfinished business. My relationship with God is more important than any other relationship I have. My chief aim of living is to please him. When we do things that waste time or intentionally disobey him, it should give us significant cause for concern if not downright fear.
If you only had 1 hour left, what would you do? What does this resolution help you to understand when it comes to your priorities and how you’re currently living?
