Have you ever tried to build something and felt like the stars were crossed against you? I’m being a little dramatic for the sake of affect but maybe you’ve felt that way. It could be something as small as a project at the house that you just could not seem to get done no matter how hard you worked or it could be something of more significance. Maybe for you there is a relationship with someone that you just can’t seem to build no matter how hard you try. It feels like fate is working against you. Maybe there is a dream that you have that you want to see come to life but something seems to be preventing you from taking the first step. You try and try but it always seems to come to nothing.

Psalm 127: 1 says, ” Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.”

This passage speaks a sobering message to me that I don’t always particularly like. It tells me that if/when I try to build something that God is not a part of, I can expect the stars to be crossed against me. I can expect opposition and I can expect defeat when I try to build something that God is not pleased with. You see, because God is a loving Father he only wants the best for our lives. When we engage ourselves in thinking, behavior and in a lifestyle that is not good for us, we should not expect the blessing of God. In fact, we should really expect God’s opposition.

I know that there are certain patterns of thinking that I try to build that God is not on board with. There are insecurities in me that I hold onto that I believe God wants to remove from my life. When I try to build my personality and life around those insecurities, things do not work out. I become a worker who is laboring in vain.

What kinds of things are you building in your life? Do you feel like you are experiencing God’s favor or opposition? It may be true that you are trying to build something that God does not want to be a part of. None of us will find true and lasting peace until we immerse ourselves in a lifestyle that God wants to bless and build.
