I’m not sure how long it will go, but I’m  going to start working through the Psalms. They are incredibly passionate expressions of worship to God and I’ve always been intrigued by them. I’m going to start taking 1 each day and reflecting on it. I would love to hear your insights and feedback along the way. Psalm 1 says…
Blessed is the one
    who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
    or sit in the company of mockers,
2Â but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and who meditates on his law day and night.
3Â That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
    which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.
4Â Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
5Â Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6Â For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
What kind of person “delights in the law of the Lord?” It’s one thing to dutifully follow God because you believe it’s the right thing to do, but to delight in him? To derive your soul’s satisfaction and pleasure primarily from God? What in the world does that look like?
This is where Christianity cannot merely be an intellectual ascent to a list of beliefs. That’s not something that can bring delight. In order for us to enjoy God and to find our primary satisfaction from following him, it has to be a relationship. It has to be a supernatural proposal whereby an ordinary person can somehow connect to an invisible and powerful God in meaningful ways. Dry religion simply cannot deliver on this….it has to be more than that.
