In case you’re wondering, this is a picture of me doing one of the less intelligent things I’ve done this year. I was at an adventure park in New Hampshire with some friends and we got to do some pretty cool stuff. The deal with the airbag was that you simply had to run off the platform and the only rule was that you couldn’t land on your feet. I guess it wasn’t safe to land feet first so you needed to fall the way you see me falling in the picture. Believe me…it feels stupid while you’re doing it.

There is something about falling however, that is just amazing! If you struggle with wanting to be in control like I do, falling is the perfect antidote. Once you jump there is nothing you can do but obey the law of gravity. You have a little control in terms of how you fall but any way you slice it…you’re falling! Out of an alpine roller coaster, an alpine slide and some other sweet activities, jumping off the platform was my favorite!

What is it about falling that feels so incredible? There is something amazing about giving yourself completely into the power of something that is stronger than you. I believe this is where trusting God comes into play. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; ⁶ in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” God wants us to trust him. To give ourselves COMPLETELY into his hands.

What if we could live each day firmly in the grasp of an incredible God? What if we could surrender the burden of control? There is however, a challenge to be confronted in trying to live this way. You see, when I jumped off the platform I had no doubt that gravity would do it’s job. It didn’t even occur to me to wonder if I would somehow defy the law of gravity and float off into the universe. Gravity never fails. Do we believe the same thing about God? Do we believe that he will fail us? If so, why? For as long as we believe that God might fail us, we simply will not trust him.
