I think that one of the toughest things in life is to learn to deal with the facts. Whether it’s a tough situation, a hard circumstance or anything like that, it’s hard sometimes to confront the truth. I tend to be optimistic, which is great, but sometimes it gets me into trouble. I would prefer to hide my eyes from things that don’t make me feel good in order to maintain a “positive” perspective.
There is no way that we will ever be successful in life until we develop an appreciation for unadulterated truth. Being someone who loves the truth can be bittersweet. Sometimes the truth is amazing and knowing it is the difference between depression and jubilation. Sometimes however, the truth is tough to swallow but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s the truth.
I want to be someone who seeks the truth regardless of the implications but I still have a long way to go. Comfort is hard to say no to and a false comfort in the one hand can seem better than the possibility of a tough truth in the other. What if though…what if you went your entire life evading the truth in your relationships, in your job, in your finances and in every other area of your life? Imagine what you would miss out on. There aren’t too many things that seem more terrifying to me than getting to the end of my life and realizing that I lived a lie.
The ball is in our court. Will we have the courage and integrity to be truth-seekers no matter what the cost is? I believe that if we will, our lives will be infinitely richer as a result. C.S. Lewis wrote, “If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.” My challenge to all of us is to become those who seek truth.
